Melatonin is a hormone also known as the "sleep hormone". It is secreted at night and sends a signal to the brain that it is time to sleep. Its production decreases with age. It has a nice orange and tangerine taste and is sugar free. Equipped with a graduated dropper, the bottle allows an easy dosage.

Melatonin is an ideal product for:

• People with light sleep;
• Elderly people (melatonin secretion is reduced with age);
• When it is not possible to sleep in a dark enough environment (city light, daytime sleep).

Do not use if you are taking immunosuppressive drugs.

Precautions:

Consult a health care practitioner prior to use if you have hormonal problems, diabetes, liver or kidney disease, cerebral palsy, seizure disorders, migraine headaches, depression or high blood pressure, or if you are taking blood pressure medication, sedatives or hypnotics. Consult a health care practitioner if symptoms persist for more than 4 weeks (chronic insomnia).

What is melatonin?

Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland (epiphysis). Melatonin secretion is inhibited in the presence of light and stimulated when it is dark. Its production decreases with age. The optimal dosage has not been established because it has varied greatly in the course of studies.

In Canada, two types of melatonin are used in supplements: melatonin from the pineal gland of animals or synthetic melatonin.

Melatonin as a tool for withdrawal from sleeping pills:

For benzodiazepine withdrawal in older adults with insomnia: 2 mg melatonin taken at bedtime for 6 weeks (benzodiazepine dose reduced by 50% in week 2, 75% in weeks 3 and 4, and stopped in weeks 5 and 6 and continued for up to 6 months).
