How it works:
Pulverized seeds are an excellent source of soluble fiber that absorbs large quantities of water and softens stools. Psyllium helps cleanse the colon by acting like a broom on the colon wall.

Psyllium seeds come from the psyllium plant, native to the Mediterranean region, North Africa and Pakistan. Psyllium is cultivated in these same regions, and is currently being experimentally cultivated in the south-western United States. The Greek word psyllium means 'flea', because of the shape, color and size of the seed. Both seeds and husks are used in herbalism. Seeds are covered by a thin envelope containing 10-30% mucilage. In water, its outer wall swells to form a layer of mucilage around the seed. The seed swells to 14 times its normal size. This mucilage lubricates and cleans the areas it passes through. Seeds have been used in Europe for intestinal health since the 16th century, but it wasn't until the early 20th century that they became popular in the United States.

Directions for use

Children and teenagers (6-12 years): take 1 capsule 3 times a day with a glass of water (250 mL).

Adolescents (13 and over) and adults: take 2 capsules 3 times a day with a glass of water (250 mL). Effects should be observable 12 to 24 hours after the first dose, and may take 2 to 3 days. Drink sufficient fluids. Take 2 hours before or after taking other medicinal agents.

Ingredients

Medicinal ingredients: Each gelatin capsule (kosher gelatin, water) contains 600 mg of the finest psyllium seed powder (Plantago psyllium). Non-medicinal ingredients: gelatin.

Warnings

Risk information: Consult a health care practitioner prior to use if you are taking medications that inhibit peristaltic movement or if you experience symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting or fever. Consult a physician if symptoms worsen or if the laxative effect does not occur within seven days. Consult a health care practitioner immediately if you experience chest pain, vomiting or difficulty swallowing/breathing after taking this product. Do not use this product if you have difficulty swallowing; if you have diabetes mellitus in which blood glucose levels are difficult to normalize; if you have undiagnosed rectal bleeding, if you are unable to defecate after using another laxative product, or if you experience a sudden change in bowel habits lasting more than two weeks. Allergies have been reported; if so, discontinue use. May cause temporary gas or bloating.
